How is diversity part of CH2M culture ?

Faye Wilson Tate:

At CH2M we believe our differences make us extraordinary, and we are deeply committed to continuously creating a culture of inclusion and success for our fellow engineers, designers and specialists. We strive to increase growth opportunities for all employees, eliminate barriers to equal opportunity, provide equal access to all individuals and meet our clients’ labor needs with a diverse workforce. We have eight global network groups, which are open to all employees, and promote and nurture a rich array of perspectives and employee engagement, serving as a source of support and solidarity for members. These groups support a wide range, including people of color, women, veterans, people with disabilities and the LGBT community.

Our Chairman and CEO, Jacque Hinman, is just one of a number of talented women making a difference around the world for our clients, and who dedicate their time and talent to serve as role models to the next generation of female engineers.

For the past three years CH2M’s passion for inspiring youth has also shone as a key sponsor and organizer of the National Society of Black Engineers’ (NSBE) Summer Engineering Experience for Kids (SEEK) Program in Denver, CO. Tailored to reach children of color, but open to all, SEEK engages with and encourages elementary school students to go to college and pursue STEM fields. Many of the college students who served as mentors were engineering majors, giving us the chance to connect with them about future CH2M internships and jobs.

We are strong community stewards via our involvement with diverse chambers of commerce, fraternities and sororities, the Urban League and other key organizations. Our commitment to diversity extends to our vendors, and we support small, disadvantaged, gay, lesbian, transgender, minority, veteran, disability and women business enterprises when possible.

How does CH2M recruit and attract a diverse workforce?

Faye Wilson Tate:

Our diversity recruitment outreach continues to expand, with a focus on building deeper and more impactful partnerships, participating at conferences and career fairs, investing in strategic advertising, sharing industry knowledge and expertise and leveraging best practices in diversity outreach.

Some of these partners include the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), Society of Asian Scientists & Engineers (SASE), Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), Women Transportation Seminar, Society of Military Engineers, Hiring Our Heroes (veterans), Council of State Administrators for Vocational Rehabilitation and the ARC.

We’ve also established connections with the university student chapters of NSBE, SWE, SHPE, SASE and IEEE’s Women in Engineering, and thanks to these partnerships, we continue to hire interns and full-time employees from these organizations. Our diversity outreach extends beyond the U.S. to include the Ab original population in Canada and service members in the U.K. Our recruiters also participate in a variety of local outreach programs to attract diverse talent pools and support employment needs of that population in some instances (e.g., a resume-writing workshop for transitioning military members).

Minority Engineer:

What qualities and skills do you seek in a new hire?

Faye Wilson Tate:

While experience in the technical aspects of a job are key, we also look for potential CH2Mers to be enthusiastic selfstarters who are passionate about what they do, and team players who can make decisions, solve problems and love turning challenges into chances.

Minority Engineer:

What is the best piece of carer advice you can offer?

Faye Wilson Tate:

Meeting professional goals is like meeting any life goals. Believe in yourself and your skills. When you fall down or make a mistake, dust yourself off and get back up. Don’t give up – nothing worth having ever comes easily! And never stop networking! Consider your current network and think about how you can continue building these crucial relationships as you move through your professional life. Consider seeking mentors and role models. They will be especially pivotal to you as you work toward your professional goals.

Minority Engineer:
